Task in hand: Forestry & Deer - Survey
Location: Shieldaig, Wester-Ross
Duration: 8 days
The Kinloch Woodland is a community managed project aiming to bring back indigenous (and local) pine forest and birchwood to a Highland estate. The team at Kinloch were keen to understand the progress of the woodland since the original planting and to provide image-based evidence in case of fire; which is becoming an increasing issue for these estates.
To support our customer, the SG Access drones team undertook a wide area survey covering approximately 4.8 sq km. In highly variable terrain the team was able to collect vast amounts of data both on the quality of the ground, and on the progress of the forest.
Back in the office this data was processed to determine overarching trends. The success of areas was assessed against elevation, ground type and sunlight conditions to determine their affects on growth. The report will represent a quantitative measure of the forestry area and tree species for insurance purposes, and to inform the future strategy in the area.
