The Kelpies constructed comprises a complicated and beautiful lattice of tubular structural steel which presented an exceptionally interesting environment for rope access and inspection works. A primary rigid structure is bolted together and then fixed to a secondary frame of smaller rails which carry brackets to provide thousands of fixing points for the stainless steel panels of the external skin.
SG rope access inspection technicians utilised complex rigging and aid climbing techniques in order to safely access all areas to be inspected.
The purpose of the survey was to check and document the security of bolted fixings, and the integrity of the painted protective coating applied to the structural steelwork, following which a detailed photographic report was compiled and presented to the client to enable evaluation of the integrity of the magnificent structures.
Following the initial survey SG Access carried out a comprehensive programme of inspection and remedial works to the bolted connections of the steel structure.
