Mode of access: Rope Access, Aid Climbing
Task in hand: Electrical Decommissioning
Team Size: 4
Duration: 1 month
The first time that Rope Access had ever been used on this site, SG Access were taken on at Sellafield Nuclear Power station to remove dangerous light fittings that had not been touched since the 1950s, and to confirm that the lighting system was electrically disconnected within Turbine Hall B, which was inaccessible to MEWP’s and for which the cost of scaffolding would have been unrealistic and prohibitive. SG electrical rope access technicians gained access to the work zone by lead climbing the lattice steelwork of the turbine hall walls, and then aid climbed within the steel purlins, rigging ropes for access, egress and rescue to any given point within the roof as required. The job was brought in ahead of time and under projected cost, with several safety issues overcome during the course of works.
