Forth Road Bridge

SG Access are proud to have worked regularly on the Forth Road Bridge since our establishment in 2008, using industrial rope access techniques to conduct several aspects of work at height, ranging from the installation of the dropped object canopy installed during the repainting of the North Tower, through the installation and commissioning of the dehumidification system, and most recently the installation and commissioning of a new acoustic monitoring system to monitor the deterioration of the main suspension cables.

Mode of access: Rope Access

Task in hand: Refurbishment of AM System

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland

Team Size: 8

Duration: 1 year

Over the course of a year our team of IRATA qualified rope access technicians worked both above and below bridge deck level to install new coaxial and fibre optic cables and sensor equipment carrying information from main cable sensors down hanger cables, then below road deck and running the full length of the bridge to information junction boxes at the towers. Following installation we conducted inspection and testing to ensure full function prior to successful handover by our client.

The environment presented by a suspension bridge is particularly challenging, frequently requiring work to take place above either water or an active carriageway, where the consequences of falls or objects dropped by those engaged in work at height are potentially catastrophic. We have worked with several contractors and Bridge management to develop suitable safe systems of work and rescue, organized and overseen by our L3 IRATA supervisors without incident.
